Ellen Williams / Riverbank

Ellen Mae Williams (b.1995) is a mixed media artist based in the UK, working with natural dye, inks and pigment. Her works evolve intuitively, using the materials to guide the painting process through layering, movement and expressive mark-making.

Ellen’s practice focuses on her innate connection to the natural world, a thread woven into her narrative since the beginning, passed down from generation to generation. Taking inspiration from the landscapes she has experienced, the micro and macro elements of a scene; from tiny details to the overall atmosphere. Her practice has a circular ethos, from the initial concept, using materials collected from the land, to the final outcome depicting the cyclical rhythm of a place, capturing not only a moment in time, but a feeling. Blurring the line between reality and fantasy, Ellen pushes these depictions to abstraction. Each fleeting memory rendered with raw, gestural marks that dance across the linen canvas, evoking a rhythmic vitality.
